Data scientist needed to advance transportation operations, safety, and mobility research using Python, R, SQL, machine‑learning, GIS and visualization tools within a federal research lab environment.
About the role
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement statistical and machine‑learning models to analyze traffic flow, safety incidents, and environmental impact data.
- Design and maintain data pipelines and databases (SQL, cloud storage) for large‑scale transportation datasets.
- Create interactive visualizations and dashboards to communicate insights to federal stakeholders and research partners.
- Collaborate with engineers and domain experts to integrate emerging technologies (e.g., connected vehicle data, sensor networks) into transportation operation studies.
- Document methodologies, produce technical reports, and present findings at conferences or briefings.
Requirements
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Transportation Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Python and R for data analysis, modeling, and machine‑learning workflows.
- Strong SQL skills and experience building/maintaining data pipelines.
- Hands‑on experience with GIS tools and transportation modeling software.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
