Software Engineer
Technical Engineer/Architect I responsible for planning, managing and evaluating traffic safety systems, overseeing the Highway Safety Improvement Program and Safety Management System, and providing expert traffic engineering support across Alaska's Northern Region.
About the role
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor traffic safety strategies for the Northern Region, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Manage the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) and Safety Management System (SMS), tracking performance metrics and allocating resources effectively.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance on traffic engineering and safety issues to regional offices, state agencies, and local governments.
- Conduct data analysis, field investigations, and safety audits to identify high‑risk locations and recommend countermeasures.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and professional testimony for legal proceedings, public hearings, and stakeholder meetings.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in traffic engineering, road safety analysis, and program management.
- Proficiency with GIS, AutoCAD, and traffic analysis software (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM).
- Strong knowledge of HSIP, SMS, and applicable safety standards (AASHTO, MUTCD).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information to diverse audiences.
