Role Overview
- The Systems Administrator is responsible for the administration, configuration, and maintenance of NLM's server infrastructure, computing systems, and network environments.
- This role ensures system availability, performance, and security in compliance with FISMA and NIH policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer, configure, and maintain Linux and Windows servers and operating systems.
- Set up and administer user accounts, disk quotas, permissions, and access controls.
- Monitor system performance and availability; identify and resolve performance issues.
- Track and manage problem reports using JIRA and ServiceNow ticketing systems.
- Create and maintain technical documentation using Confluence Wiki.
- Provide customer service and technical support to internal and external staff in plain language.
- Support secure remote access to cloud computing, storage, and service platforms.
- Administer distributed computing systems including batch queuing software.
- Implement and maintain FISMA-compliant security practices: firewalls, intrusion detection systems, secure computing environments, disaster recovery.
- Provide security management to identify and resolve vulnerabilities in Windows and Linux systems.
- Conduct ongoing vulnerability assessments and ensure resolution within prescribed timelines.
- Support cloud computing infrastructure for production web services, HPC, and high-throughput processing.
- Assist in implementation of computer security practices including Government FISMA policies.
- Manage on-boarding/off-boarding of system users; maintain system access rosters.
- Support Authority to Operate (ATO) maintenance activities.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science, or related field.
- Minimum 4–6 years of systems administration experience in a federal or enterprise environment.
- Expert-level Linux (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu) and Windows Server administration.
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and IAM administration.
