Staff Backend Engineer, Data and AI

Role Overview

Airbnb is seeking a data-focused Staff Backend Engineer to join the Marketplaces Data and AI team. This team is foundational to Airbnb, working on components related to users, listings, and the marketplace. The quality of data is critical to the success of Airbnb's products and business, and this role will contribute to strengthening the data foundation and unlocking greater value from data and machine learning models.

This role may involve working with the Listings and Host Tools Data and AI (LHT-DnA) team, which supports host personalization products, or the Supply & Competitive Intelligence team, which builds systems for a real-time, comprehensive view of the global travel market.

As a Staff Engineer, you will help drive the technology and implementation strategy to directly assist hosts in running their day-to-day business. This involves proactive engagement with a wide range of teams and cross-functional partners.

A Typical Day Will Involve

• Working with product and ML engineers to explore problem spaces and devise solutions to customer problems.
• Prototyping new ideas and influencing the product strategy.
• Proactively collaborating with other engineering teams to develop an iterative plan to improve APIs and architecture.
• Collaborating with other product engineers and partners to develop backend support for data and AI solutions.
• Creating technical and execution strategies for new projects and driving hands-on implementation of those solutions.
• Identifying areas for improvement and championing the adoption of best practices in product development, engineering architecture, and testing.
• Performing technical design reviews and code reviews.
• Mentoring and growing more junior engineers.

Your Expertise

• 10+ years industry experience.
• Experience leading teams, setting technical direction, and building & launching high-impact user-facing products.
• Experience influencing partners such as designers, product managers, and other engineering teams.
• Excitement to ideate, prototype new ideas, and influence product direction.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a team and across engineering teams.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow more junior engineers, and set and drive best practices.
