We're Inferentics, an early-stage B2B EdTech startup building AI-powered exam analytics infrastructure for CBSE schools across India. Our core product ingests student exam data and turns it into diagnostic insights and recommended actions for teachers, HODs, and principals. We have a live product, real school partners, and real data. Now we're building the team that takes us to scale.
About the role
We're looking for a Senior AI Engineer who can also operate as the technical lead for our small engineering team. This is a founding-team role. You'll set the technical direction, ship features fast, and work directly with the PM and leadership on what gets built and how. This is not a pure IC role. You'll be the senior-most engineer in the room, which means you own the architecture, mentor the team, and are the bridge between product and engineering.
Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering team: set technical direction, review code, unblock junior engineers, and create a culture of high ownership and fast shipping
- Build and own the AI pipeline: from prompt engineering and LLM integration to fine-tuning and model evaluation
- Ship product, fast: work closely with the PM to scope features, make build-vs-buy calls, and get things into production without unnecessary overhead
- Design scalable backend systems: APIs, data pipelines, OCR and document processing workflows, all built for the school-scale data volumes we're working with
- Think about scale while moving at startup speed: architecture decisions now need to hold up as we expand across hundreds of schools
- Influence the roadmap: you'll have a seat at the table on what features get prioritised and how we evolve the product
What we're looking for
- At least 5 years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in AI/ML engineering roles
- Hands-on experience building and shipping LLM-powered features in production: prompt engineering, RAG, fine-tuning, evaluation pipelines
- Strong Python backend skills; experience with FastAPI or similar; comfort with data-heavy workloads
- Experience in a tech lead or senior IC role: you've mentored engineers and driven technical decisions, not just executed them
- High ownership, zero-to-one mentality: you've built systems from scratch and know what good looks like at an early stage
- Comfort working directly with product and business stakeholders, not just engineering
Good to have
- Experience at an AI-first company or EdTech product where AI is the core.
- Worked on OCR, document processing, or exam/assessment data pipelines
- Frontend exposure (React / TypeScript) — we're a small team and full-stack flexibility helps
