Senior Protection and Controls Engineer - Transmission System Operations - American Electric Power

Key Responsibilities

• Lead engineering analysis and design of protection and control schemes for transmission assets, ensuring alignment with NERC standards and utility operating procedures.
• Coordinate configuration changes, perform relay coordination studies, and validate protection settings through simulation and field testing.
• Collaborate with operations, planning, and maintenance teams to integrate protection upgrades into system operations and outage schedules.
• Prepare technical documentation, reports, and change requests for regulatory review and internal audit.
• Provide subject‑matter expertise on protection system performance, reliability, and cybersecurity considerations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred.
• 10+ years of experience in transmission protection and control engineering within a regulated utility environment.
• Deep knowledge of NERC CIP, PSS/E, ETAP, or similar power system analysis tools.
• Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills.
• Ability to work independently and lead cross‑functional teams in a fast‑paced environment.
