Lead Data Scientist, Climate & Data Technology

About the Role

Join NatWest Group as a Lead Data Scientist within the Climate & Data Technology team. This role is a 12-month opportunity to contribute to climate-first business decisions, quantify the environmental impact of lending, and guide customers towards economically sustainable carbon footprint reduction. You will play a pivotal role in leading the data community, identifying opportunities to leverage data for strategic direction, and setting standards while upskilling your team, particularly in Python.

What you'll do

As a Lead Data Scientist, you will evaluate and improve business processes and products, focusing on the environmental impact of the business and its customers. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on diverse business problems, including modeling climate change impact and identifying innovative ways to support the green transition.

• Lead technical research projects and train junior data scientists.
• Communicate effectively across functions and franchises to make business recommendations, influence stakeholders, and gain business buy-in.
• Conduct data gathering and requirements specification in collaboration with business stakeholders.
• Iteratively build and prototype data analysis pipelines to provide insights for production deployment.
• Identify new methods, tools, techniques, and opportunities to deliver business value through cost reduction, income generation, or improved customer experience via data science applications.

The skills you'll need

To succeed in this role, you will need prior project implementation experience and work experience in a data analysis-related field as part of a multidisciplinary team. A degree in a quantitative discipline or equivalent practical experience is also required.

• Practical experience using advanced statistical techniques and machine learning models to drive business decisions.
• Strong Python skills, with ideal knowledge or experience in AWS, SQL, Tableau, and PySpark.
• Experience articulating and translating business questions and using statistical techniques to answer them with available data.
• Demonstrated leadership, self-direction, and a willingness to teach others and learn new techniques.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt your style to different audiences.
• Extensive relevant work experience, including expertise in statistical data analysis such as linear models, multivariate analysis, stochastic models, and sampling methods.
