About The Cyprus Institute
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.
About the Role
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a new faculty member at the level of Assistant or Associate or Full Professor, to join the Institute’s CaSToRC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus. The selected faculty applicant will enhance the competencies of the Institute in one or more of the following research areas:
- foundation models and efficient training/adaptation methods on HPC systems
- generative AI and multimodal learning
- causal representation learning and counterfactual reasoning
- robustness, safety, and trustworthy ML (including interpretability and fairness)
- continual, federated, and edge learning
- ML for scientific discovery
Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in AI and ML methodologies complemented with experience in the utilization of advanced computing technologies such as HPC and/or cloud computing. The selected applicant will implement and advance the research agenda of the Institute in general and of CaSToRC in particular in close collaboration with faculty, research staff and the leadership of CyI. As a faculty member, an aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching doctoral and master’s students is necessary as the successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the Institute’s graduate program. The candidate will work in Cyprus and will be offered a tenure-track position for the rank of Assistant Professor, a tenure-track or tenured position for the rank of Associate Professor, or a tenured position for the rank of Full Professor. Responsibilities
The new faculty member will contribute to shaping the Institute’s research agenda by:
- Developing and implementing strategies appropriate to the Institute’s mission.
- Mentoring, educating and providing research guidance to graduate students.
- Developing and expanding the Institute’s research, innovation and educational activities.
- Developing a world-class research program in one or more of the following areas: (i) foundation models and efficient training/adaptation methods on HPC systems, (ii) generative AI and multimodal learning, (iii) causal representation learning and counterfactual reasoning, (iv) robustness, safety, and trustworthy ML (including interpretability and fairness), (v) continual, federated, and edge learning, (vi) ML for scientific discovery.
- Assisting in building a transdisciplinary research environment and collaborations with other research areas where the aforementioned fields are applicable.
- Securing financial and other resources from national and international sources.
- Initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research institutions that conduct research in areas related to his/her respective fields.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of facilities appropriate to the research of The Cyprus Institute.
- Communicating the results and implications of research conducted in CaSToRC and The Institute at all levels, including academic, popular, and policy-related.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Computational Sciences, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Proven research and academic record of international standing.
- Experience of coordinating and/or participating in competitive grants.
- Experience in supervising, mentoring and teaching graduate students depending on the rank they are applying for (an absolute requirement for the Associate and Full Professor rank).
- Teaching and postgraduate training record, appropriate for the rank the candidate is applying for.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Excellent interpersonal and management skills.
Desired Qualifications
- Assistant Professor: Requires a minimum of three years of post‑doctoral research experience, or equivalent experience, in relevant research fields.
- Associate Professor: Requires at least seven years of internationally recognized research and teaching/mentoring experience (following the award of a PhD) in the relevant scientific field, along with a distinguished record of teaching, research, and service appropriate to the field and career stage.
- Full Professor: Requires a minimum of eleven years of internationally recognized research and teaching/mentoring experience (after the award of a PhD) in the relevant scientific field, accompanied by a highly distinguished record of teaching, research, and service. Also requires experience in supervising (or co-supervising) of postgraduate students (at least three fully graduated PhD students), postdoctoral researchers, and research teams.
