Deputy Director, AI International

The Deputy Director, AI International will play a critical role in shaping the UK's international AI policy and maintaining its global leadership. This role involves building strong relationships with international partners and influencing discussions on AI at various multilateral forums to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of AI developments and risks.

AI is bringing about huge changes to society, and it is our job as a team to work out how Government should respond, including at the Prime Minister’s forthcoming AI Safety Summit. It’s a once-in-a-generation moment, and an incredibly fast-paced and exciting environment.

The UK is committed to finding solutions on AI together with its international partners, and your role will sit at the heart of the wider AI team. The postholder will play a critical role in maintaining the momentum created by the Summit, continuing to strengthen these pivotal relationships for international collaboration and actively shape the international discussions on AI to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of developments and emerging risks and opportunities.

Key responsibilities will include:

Maintaining the UK’s role as a global leader on AI following the AI Safety Summit;
Providing thought leadership on the overall international AI landscape in the coming years;
Building strong relationships and influencing international discussions both bilaterally with key international partners (e.g. the USA and the EU) and in larger settings including the G7, G20, OECD and UN;
Ensuring the UK’s domestic AI policy aligns with international ambitions;
Joining up with cross-government partners who represent HMG in international/multilateral groups, including building a strong relationship with No10; and
Playing a key senior leadership role of the wider AI Policy Directorate.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following essential skills and experience:

Essential criteria:

Strong experience of influencing senior decision makers (ideally at Secretary of State level or equivalent);
Strong experience of building effective networks to advance an agenda;
Strong analytical and prioritisation skills to deliver real impact;
Experience of delivering policy with international counterparts; and
Effective and inspiring leadership of diverse teams.

Desirable attributes:

Experience of AI and/or technology policy development strongly desirable; and
Experience working on national security issues.
