Super Resolution with CNNs and GANs

We investigated the problem of image super-resolution (SR), which is to reconstruct high-resolution images (HR) from low-resolution input images (LR). The goal of this project is to improve super-resolution of human faces and overcome the limitation of extant models. • Presented a residual learning framework (Deep Recursive Residual Network (DRRN)) to ease the training of the substantially deep network; Reformulated the structure of DRRN to improve its performance • Built a super-resolution generative adversarial network (SRGAN) framework to recover high-frequency details of HR images and improve images' perceptual qualities; Proposed several loss functions based on perceptual loss, i.e. SSIM loss and/ or total variation (TV) loss, to enhance the structural integrity of generative images • A condition is injected to resolve the problem of missing partial information associated with GANs The results show that our methods and trails can achieve equivalent performance on most of the benchmarks compared with previous state-of-art methods, and out-perform them in terms of the structural similarity.
Now-Casting Employment

Currently, there are no accurate nowcasts - or daily predictors - of national unemployment. Utilizing both subjective, economic sentiment data and objective, demographic data, we propose utilizing a new computational approach to accurately predict daily unemployment rates. By combining unsupervised and supervised methods, we are able to overcome many of the existing biases currently plaguing survey data, increasing the accuracy of survey-based predictions from an RMSE of 0.164 to 0.010. Furthermore, we show that subjective data can increase the accuracy of our predictive model, encouraging future work investigating the adoption of economic sentiment into nowcasting a range of economic indicators.
