Design of a High Endurance Surveillance UAV - 3rd Year MEng Aerospace Group Design Project

Avionics Specialist for a 3rd year MEng Aerospace Engineering interdisciplinary project, tasked with designing a high endurance surveillance UAV. Different team members covered specific technical areas and a systems engineering approach was employed for the overall project. In my technical area, I used specific software such as Solidworks, Matlab and MissionPlanner. The task was to design, manufacture and test an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The UAV should have supported aerial photography/video and could travel to geographical coordinates via global positioning system (GPS). The UAV must have fit within the requirements for a Small Unmanned Surveillance Aircraft (SUSA) as defined by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). In order to complete the project the team designed and manufactured a fixed wing, high wing, electrically powered UAV, which necessitated the manufacture of a scale model to place in a wind tunnel, manufacturing components from scratch and rewiring electrical components to suit the projects purpose.

Aerodynamic investigation of a morphing rectangular micro air vehicle (MAV) wing with two aerofoil solutions being presented for cruise and loiter flight conditions. The main goals of this investigation were to determine the aerofoils with the minimum drag profiles, analyze the effects that low Re number flight has on air flow (separation bubbles) and calculate the thrust required for the MAV. Numerical analysis was performed using XFOIL 6.99

Simurq it is a society based in two projects: UAV and Volaticus in which I am taking part. The Volaticus project is base in the design of an aircraft powered by just the pedalling of a person being able to take off, fly and land. This project gave me very useful skills as modelling, testing, design, prototyping, brainstorming and research. The UAV project is base in an unmanned aircraft that could be used for surveillance, military usage or researches. This other project gave me a wide understanding of avionics and control system that help me a lot in my degree.
