Dean-Sets
October 1, 2016 – Present
Dean-Sets is based on Set, a fast-paced card game, the goal of which is to make valid "sets" of cards. Cards vary in their colors, the shapes they present, the color of the shapes, and their shading. A set is valid if it contains three cards for which, across EACH of the four categories mentioned above, the three cards are either all different or all the same. Set was made using Ruby on Rails and React, and is available at dean-sets.herokuapp.com.
Treat-Yoselves
October 1, 2016 – Present
Treat-yoselves, a project that I led during a hackathon held at DevBootcamp the week after graduation, began as a a silly and seasonal app idea. The idea was to create an app where various users that belong to a group could drop pins on a shared map and thus, as a group, plan a trick-or-treat'ing route. The main motivation was to gain experience working with React Native and the Google Maps/Directions API's. Having been less than a week out of DevBootcamp, our ability to put together a working mobile app using React Native (which he had never used before) and draw routes between pins dropped by users (in just over a day) earned us "most impressive use of technology" and "overall winner" at the hackathon.
State Matters
October 1, 2016 – Present
State Matters is a React.js project built in Node.js that allows NY residents to input their address, learn who their state senator is, and immediately see how that senator has been voting on the year's most contentious bills to date. Users can also see what kinds of bills their representative has been sponsoring, the status of those bills, and all of this can be filtered by key words that interest the voter. State Matters uses NY's Open Legislation API, the Google Maps API for basic geocoding, and utlizes libraries like Fullpage.js and Materialize for its style and feel. Available at state-matters.com.
NameOverthink
September 1, 2016 – Present
NameOverthink is a stripped down clone of the ever-popular StackOverflow. NameOverthink was made using Ruby combined with a lightweight Sinatra web app for the back-end and jQuery/AJAX for fluid front-end interactions. Available at name-overthink.herokuapp.com.
StoryBook Labs, Inc
January 1, 2016 – Present
StoryBook is a mobile-first app that aims to help users take back control of their social media experiences by providing a platform that allows groups to collaboratively construct shared photo/video albums. After participating in Oberlin College's startup incubator LaunchU in January of 2016 a fellow co-founder and I earned 2nd place and $15,000 in funding in the program's final pitch competition. We then founded StoryBook Labs, and the app is currently in development with a live beta in the app store. My role in this project has been primarily that of a project manager, though I've also been heavily involved in on-boarding new team members and shaping the overall vision for the product.
Cultural Fit Analysis
The candidate's diverse project portfolio, including personal projects in web development and a startup incubator experience, demonstrates initiative and a broad interest in technology. Their career progression from full-stack to machine learning engineering aligns with a growth-oriented culture. The experience in a startup environment (StoryBook Labs, JOANY) suggests comfort with dynamic and fast-paced settings. The target role of 'Backend Engineer' aligns well with their foundational full-stack experience and data pipeline work, though their recent focus on ML might require a re-orientation to pure backend systems.
Soft Skills & Operational Fit
The candidate's project descriptions, particularly for StoryBook Labs and Treat-Yoselves, indicate strong project management, team collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Their transition from full-stack development to machine learning engineering suggests adaptability and a continuous learning mindset. The psychometric test results are not available, so a full assessment of work attitude, stress handling, and team collaboration cannot be made.
