Free Realms PS3
August 1, 2010 – November 1, 2011
Free Realms is a free-to-play MMO targeted at kids and adults aged 6+. Originally available on PC and later ported to the PS3, Free Realms has boasted over 20 million registered users since its release in April 2009. As an engineer assigned to the PS3 port, I was mainly responsible for optimizing loading times for overworld areas and instances (spawned quests and minigames), for reducing the game's overall memory footprint, and for optimizing time spent on the CPU. Libraries I optimized for the PS3 included the Bullet physics SDK, Umbra occlusion library, and Scaleform UI library. I performed static memory analysis using both handwritten tools and tools provided by SCEA, and used dynamic profiling tools such as RAD Game Tools' Telemetry to boost CPU performance and to decrease loading times. I also achieved loading time improvements by moving CPU-blocking tasks such as decompression to the SPUs, and by parallelizing asset loading using FIOS. I was also responsible for diagnosing critical bugs and implementing workarounds for PS3 limitations, as well as consulting Sony Online Entertainment engineers as to best practices to use when developing a title for PS3.
Cultural Fit Analysis
The candidate's extensive experience in the game development industry, working on various genres (MMO, RPG, FPS, Sports) and platforms, indicates a strong passion and commitment to the field. The detailed descriptions of optimizing game performance and building complex AI systems suggest a drive for technical excellence and innovation, which aligns well with a demanding game development culture. The pursuit of an MBA and MS in Computer Science demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth, which is a positive indicator for cultural fit in a dynamic industry. The candidate's experience with both large studios (Meta, 343 Industries) and smaller ones (Harebrained Schemes, Hardsuit Labs) shows adaptability to different team sizes and structures.
Soft Skills & Operational Fit
The candidate's project descriptions highlight a strong focus on problem-solving, optimization, and collaboration (e.g., 'Two engineer team', 'consulting Sony Online Entertainment engineers'). The detailed explanations of technical challenges and solutions suggest a methodical and analytical approach to development. Experience in building custom tools for designers indicates a user-centric mindset and an ability to bridge technical and design requirements. The breadth of experience across different companies and project types suggests adaptability and a capacity to integrate into diverse operational environments.
