Director of AI at Translated / Pi School
My goal is to push projects through the science - technology - product - market path, in my area of expertise, machine intelligence. I build and grow teams and activities with a scientific focus on machine learning applied to language. I generate income both directly through sales and grants, and indirectly by delivering technology for products. I currently do this as the Director of AI at Translated, a technology-intensive player in the translation and localisation industry, where I lead the AI team. Translated is part of the startup district and venture fund Pi Campus, in Rome, Italy, where I am the Managing Director of Pi School, its AI education arm. I regularly speak at international events. I review for NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR. After taking an Ingénieur degree from Ecole Centrale Paris, and an MPhil in computer speech and language processing from the University of Cambridge, I spent 16 years in the speech and language industry in different European ventures, starting from the EU branch of Tellme Networks (now Microsoft) to startups in speech recognition and virtual conversational agents. Moving on to machine learning and AI applications more broadly, I took a PhD in probabilistic machine learning with Zoubin Ghahramani at the University of Cambridge, UK.

Foundation models for speech. The power of LLMs for videoconferencing. Your assistant and stand-in avatar to deal with your virtual presence. We want to "solve speech" :-) ! We're open-sourcing it all: data, model weights, benchmarks. I am the lead of this 4-year, 7.2M€ Horizon Europe project, involving Translated, Pi School, Zoom, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, TU Istanbul, TAUS.
Cultural Fit Analysis
The candidate's background is heavily skewed towards academic research, R&D project coordination, and AI/ML leadership, with significant involvement in open-sourcing initiatives. While this demonstrates a strong drive for innovation and collaboration, the direct alignment with a typical 'Backend Engineer' role in a product-focused company is not immediately clear. The projects are large-scale research endeavors rather than traditional product development. The candidate's experience suggests a fit for an R&D-heavy or AI-focused engineering culture, but might require adjustment to a standard backend development environment.
Soft Skills & Operational Fit
The candidate demonstrates strong leadership, project management, and communication skills through their roles as RIA Coordinator, Managing Director, and Director of AI. Their experience in teaching and mentoring suggests an ability to foster team growth and knowledge sharing. The coordination of multi-million Euro projects indicates strong organizational and strategic planning capabilities. However, the resume does not provide specific examples of day-to-day backend engineering operational fit, such as experience with specific backend frameworks, databases, or deployment pipelines, which are crucial for a Backend Engineer role.
