AI, Machine Learning, Neural Computing | Fraud Detection | Payments
I started my lifelong career in AI/Machine learning/Neural Computing in 1980s and was a pioneer of the practical deployment of machine learning in a diverse range of applications – with worldwide recognised “firsts” - focused at FinTech before it was called that! I have a track record of computational neuroscience applied and deployed as solutions across industry, including credit/risk scoring (deployed in 35+ banks) and payment fraud detection (deployed at over 150+ institutions). I founded a machine learning and data science company in 1980's and grew this with offices in Petersfield, Singapore, Sydney and New York. I managed all aspects of the business with a focus on our research scientists and software development teams. Established myself as a leader in applying machine learning research to solve real-world problems and developed strategic partnerships with UK GCHQ, MOD, banking, payments, finance and telecoms businesses.

Cultural Fit Analysis
The candidate's background is heavily skewed towards academic research, leadership, and entrepreneurial ventures in AI/ML, particularly in fraud detection. While highly skilled, the direct alignment with a typical 'Backend Engineer' role, which often involves hands-on coding and system maintenance in a specific tech stack, is not explicitly demonstrated. The candidate's experience is more strategic and architectural. The lack of specific project details or a diverse range of backend technologies might indicate a potential mismatch for a hands-on engineering role, though their deep technical understanding could be valuable in a more senior, architect-level backend position.
Soft Skills & Operational Fit
The candidate's extensive leadership and academic roles suggest strong communication, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills. Their history of founding companies and leading innovation programs indicates an entrepreneurial mindset and ability to drive technical vision. The focus on real-world applications of AI/ML in finance aligns well with operational needs requiring robust, scalable solutions.
