Staff/Principal Engineer · Tech Lead · Solutions Architect · PHP · TypeScript · Vue · APIs · Silverstripe CMS Core Maintainer · Product-focused · NZ / AU / Remote
Tech lead and back-end-leaning fullstack engineer. Writing code since Pascal and Delphi in the late '90s, professionally since 2007. I take ownership of complex systems end-to-end — architecture, delivery, mentorship, and the unglamorous reliability work that keeps them running. WHAT I DO BEST — Back-end business logic in PHP and TypeScript, Vue.js on the front-end, REST and GraphQL APIs. — Architecture and tech-direction calls — choosing what to build, how to build it, what to keep and what to throw away. — Mentoring developers and lifting team standards (code review culture, CI/CD, testing). — Adopting AI development tools (Codex, Claude Code, Cursor) into engineering workflows — using them to accelerate delivery without losing rigour around review, testing, and architectural intent. OPEN SOURCE Core committer and maintainer of Silverstripe CMS and many of its supported modules — reviewing PRs, triaging issues, and shipping core releases used by NZ Government and thousands of organisations worldwide. RECENT WORK — Silverstripe CMS 6 upgrades at Somar Digital (PHP, Vue, TypeScript) — 2025–present. — Senior Technical Consultant at Chrometoaster — ongoing advisory and delivery on Silverstripe-based sites. — Matomo Analytics core developer at InnoCraft (PHP, JS) — 2023–2025. — Silverstripe migrations and BAU support across MBIE digital estate. — Building data pipelines integrating public datasets for private projects. WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR Staff/Principal IC, Tech Lead, or Solutions Architect roles at product companies — healthcare, fintech, govt, developer tools, or mission-driven SaaS. Based in Wellington, open to NZ, Australia, and remote across all time zones. Reach me at mk@011.nz.

Outward Bound
January 1, 2013 – December 1, 2013
Outward Bound offer life-changing adventure courses for people of all ages. It was important that their new site was accessible to a wide age-range of users, many with mobile devices. I've learned how to develop a content rich website using Wordpress, defining custom content types and connecting the site with customer's CRM system. Cooperation with Dan was excellent and I'd be more than happy to work with him on new projects. Dan is always keen to try new technologies and is open to a discussion (sometimes it requires balancing frontend and backend parts). Technologies used: Wordpress with Woocommerce custom theme custom content types as little plugins as necessary but with WP it's hard to avoid using them REST client to pull and push data from/to the customer's CRM system SVN for versioning PHP
Cultural Fit Analysis
The candidate has a diverse background working with various companies, including agencies, government, and startups, and has experience in both full-time and contract roles. Their involvement in open-source projects and willingness to try new technologies (as noted in the 'Outward Bound' project) suggests adaptability and a collaborative mindset. However, the target role is 'ETL Engineer', and while there's mention of 'building data pipelines' and 'data integration', the primary focus of their experience is web development (PHP, CMS, frontend frameworks). This might indicate a slight misalignment with a pure ETL-focused role, but their foundational skills in databases, APIs, and system design are transferable.
Soft Skills & Operational Fit
The candidate's experience as a Technical Lead and VP of Engineering, along with mentoring roles, indicates strong leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Their involvement in open-source contributions and community support suggests a proactive and team-oriented approach. The descriptions highlight an ability to balance technical debt with deadlines and introduce modern development practices (e.g., DDEV, Docker, automated pipelines).
