Signature Discovery Initiative

I am currently leading the last year of a five year, multi-million dollar investment in signature discovery. A signature is a unique or distinguishing measurement, pattern or collection of data that identifies a phenomenon (object, action or behavior) of interest. This initiative has developed a rapid, robust process to discover new signatures in any domain. This effort has developed new algorithms and tools that are now solving pressing national challenges.
Hierarchical Signature Detection

Funding - 800K I have led a two year project funded under PNNL’s Signature Discovery Initiative (SDI). The project, which consists of 4 staff, developed a new statistical framework that enabled the distribution of signature detection tasks across hierarchical systems. The approach accelerates the detection process by leveraging distributed evidence to assess the probability that certain primary events will occur, thus creating early situation awareness. The project has developed new intellectual property and is producing new technical journal articles.

The project developed an actionable visualization tools for power grid situation awareness. This project’s software enables multiple organizations to intuitively and seamlessly share information inorder to enhance multi-organization collaboration during critical events. The project has developed new intellectual property and is producing new technical journal articles.
Visualizing Uncertainty in Conceptual and Numerical Models

Funding - 715K I led a three year project funded under PNNL’s Carbon Sequestration Initiative (CSI). The project, which consisted of 7 staff, researched new methods for characterizing and visualizing conceptual and numerical uncertainties in predictive models. This work resulted in several publications, new intellectual property, and new business development.
