Distinguished Scientist, Machine Learning Research at Apple
In graduate school I worked under the guidance of two exceptional scientists in the fields of machine learning (Prof. Geoffrey Hinton) and behavioral science (Prof. Adam Anderson). I developed the first deep neural networks that could recognize and generate facial expressions, and showed how statistical regularities learned by these computational models predict elements of human perception. My work was featured in high impact journals including Nature Neuroscience and Science and in top computer vision conferences. I co-founded Emotient in 2012, a startup focused on realtime perception of human behavior, which was acquired by Apple in 2016.

Cultural Fit Analysis
The candidate's career trajectory shows a strong focus on deep learning, machine learning, and research, primarily in academic and R&D settings (Apple, Emotient, UCSD). While they have experience with data analytics and predictive modeling, their primary expertise appears to be in advanced ML/AI research rather than core data analysis. The target role of 'Data Analyst' might be a mismatch for their senior-level research and engineering background, potentially leading to underutilization of their advanced skills or a desire for more complex, research-oriented tasks. Their diverse background in psychology and computer science, however, suggests adaptability and a broad intellectual curiosity.
Soft Skills & Operational Fit
The candidate's extensive experience in leading research teams and co-founding a company suggests strong leadership, problem-solving, and innovation skills. Their academic background in psychology and cognitive science, combined with machine learning, indicates an analytical mindset and ability to understand complex human behavior, which is valuable for interpreting data. The descriptions imply a capacity for independent research and development, as well as collaboration within a team.
