Kaggle hosts data mining competitions, and I worked on a project analyzing some text data they posted. The problem was: Given some comment (from an online blog, forum, tweet, etc.) determine whether it is an insult. They provided a training dataset in the form of a two-column matrix (text and 1/0 for insult/not insult). Using text data mining techniques, I developed an algorithm that was able to predict insults on the test data set with an AUC of roughly .90.
