Final Degree Project - Facultad de Informática, Universidad Complutense de Madrid SmartCloud intends to be a new concept on Cloud Computing, focused on taking the most profit of an existing infrastructure, and with the goal of providing a service to students and researchers within an Education environment. The main idea is to rise virtual machines on computers in a LAN, which aren't currently in use. Those machines can load several system images (preconfigured by an administrator), and can be provided as a processing node inside a cluster or as a user session for a remote user. This first implementation of SmartCloud will rise Ubuntu Server operating system on free machines with an iPython processing node installed. There will be also a front end server with a web interface for the user and iPython server installed. With all this infrastructure we can provide an iPython Notebook (web) interface for students or researchers where all the processing will be done in our cluster. The cluster will be dynamic because the more unused machines there are in the Network, more processing nodes can rise. The rising of machines will be done automatically when computers are idle for a predefined period of time. All technologies used in this project are open source. We think this project will allow researchers and students to use a powerful tool as iPython with a large and scalable processing capacity with no cost for Education Centers. This will be a direct save for those institutions on Licences and Hardware budgets.
