VP of Research at Diffbot
I am a hands-on manager with 9 years of experience leading data teams, engineering teams, and applied research teams. I am interested in leading both applied research and core engineering teams building smart, data-driven products using machine learning. I am the Vice President of Applied Research at Diffbot, a startup created in Stanford. I helped launch the Diffbot Knowledge Graph (a database of the public web) and the Diffbot Natural Language API (a service to convert unstructured documents into structured data). I have received my Ph.D. degree from the University of Alberta on the topic of automatically discovering and extracting relationships among entities like people and organizations from text. My work has been published in top-tier conferences and journals, such as EMNLP, NAACL, SIGMOD, TWEB, and SIGIR. Previously, I have served as Vice President of Data Science at Mitre Media, the parent company of Dividend.com and ETFdb.com. Cultural Fit Analysis
The candidate has a strong background in research and data science, with a clear progression into leadership roles within AI/ML-focused companies. While the target role is 'Backend Engineer', their experience is heavily skewed towards Machine Learning Engineering, Data Science, and Research. This might indicate a potential mismatch if the backend role is primarily focused on traditional API development, database management, and system architecture without a significant ML component. The candidate's academic background and research publications suggest a culture of innovation and deep technical exploration.
Soft Skills & Operational Fit
The candidate's experience as a Research Manager and VP of Applied Research indicates strong leadership, team management, and strategic thinking skills. Their work on launching major products suggests initiative and problem-solving capabilities. The academic background implies strong analytical and research skills. However, specific operational fit for a pure Backend Engineer role (e.g., agile methodologies, specific CI/CD practices) is not explicitly detailed.
