Machine Learning Driven Detection of Dental Irregularities in Panoramic Radiographs

Curated, cropped, and annotated a medically validated dataset of panoramic dental X-rays mapping 6 diagnostic classes (Crown, Crown Bridge, Filling, Hypodontia, Impacted Tooth, Root Canal) using Label Studio. Automated image enhancement utilizing Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Networks (ESRGAN) to highlight subtle micro-structures and boundaries. Designed and trained a series of single-stage and two-stage object detection architectures. Developed a custom YOLOv26 framework optimized with multi-scale feature aggregation and a 1024x1024 input resolution to effectively handle small and low-contrast anomalies, achieving a baseline performance metric of 0.66 mAP@50. Successfully bridged algorithmic development and clinical utility by deploying the optimal model into a functional web-based diagnostic assistant. Built user features including real-time image processing, region-based visual close-ups of detected anomalies, an integrated AI chat assistant for clinical interpretation, and automated PDF screening report generation.
