3D Scanner using Microsoft Kinect
December 1, 2014 – Present
Currently working on this project in which we are using Microsoft Kinect Sensor to get depth map of any object and using PCL, to get its point cloud. After pre-processing and segmenting the point cloud, we will be trying to get a polygon mesh around the point cloud to generate a CAD file. Finally with Registration process in PCL, the output will be a CAD file in .stl,.obj or .pcd format. This file can directly be given to a 3D printer to get a 3D printed model out of the scanned object. However the problems we are facing are the resolution of the point cloud which is poor in case of kinect sensor. Also, the difficult process of registration of different views doesn’t render good quality output image. Hence, we are thinking of replacing kinect sensor altogether with OpenNI compatible Structure sensor. This project is done in association with a startup based in Mumbai called, AnantComputing.
Butler-Bot
December 1, 2013 – Present
As the name suggests, ‘Butler Bot’ is an autonomous robot which performs the work of a Butler. It utilizes the Microsoft Kinect Sensor for Xbox 360. The Kinect forms the ears and eyes of this intelligent robot which serves its master without any complaints or demands! It can assist people in their work and carry whatever it’s told to carry with utmost precision. It assists the elderly people in their daily activities and also reminds them to take their medicines on time. A certain predefined gesture is also used, on doing which the robot follows the master using two motorized wheels and thus providing assistance everywhere. Speech recognition has also been incorporated so that the robot can communicate with its master. Other than that, the carrying capacity of 100 kg helps it to perform varied tasks ranging from serving in a restaurant to carrying payloads in the industrial sector.
