Background: Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) is the heart of all Natural Language Processing problems. WSD is the task of computationally determining senses of a word in a context Aim: To explore the dichotomy that might exist between machines and humans in the way they determine senses (meanings) by studying the various parameters for WSD and also the sense marking behavior of sense annotators and machines. We also strive to find the levels of difficulties in annotating various classes of words, with senses and finding patterns in contextual clues that aid lexicographers during the annotation task. Adding this intelligence to a suitable machine learning algorithm for WSD, and striking the right balance between rule based and statistical learning based approaches is a stepping stone towards building a Strong AI based WSD system
