Assistant Professor of Environmental Geography at VU Amsterdam
I am a research scientist working on modelling, mapping, and studying socio-cultural landscape interactions. I specialize in landscape qualities, such as livability and aesthetic beauty, especially as they are perceived by people. I'm also interested in dataset fairness (e.g. biases and confounders), human-machine interactions, multimodal data fusion approaches, and the interpretability of models. In 2024 I obtained my PhD degree from Wageningen University on the topic of deep learning for landscape qualities. I'm currently an assistant professor of environmental geography at the VU Amsterdam.

Cultural Fit Analysis
The candidate's background is heavily academic and research-oriented, with a strong focus on GeoAI and Remote Sensing. While this provides deep expertise in a niche ML area, the breadth of experience in general software engineering practices, product development lifecycles, or diverse industry applications for ML is not explicitly detailed. This might indicate a stronger fit for research-focused ML roles or organizations that heavily leverage geospatial data. The lack of diverse project experience outside of academic/research settings could be a moderate cultural fit challenge for a general ML Engineer role in a fast-paced product-driven environment.
Soft Skills & Operational Fit
The candidate's academic and research roles suggest strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and independent research capabilities. Experience in teaching and guest lecturing implies good communication and presentation skills. The descriptions of past roles indicate a proactive approach to R&D and introducing new technologies (e.g., machine learning to Antea Group).
